Clear The Gate First
Line by line
"And if I wanted to run out then, with that crowd of gatekeepers blocking the way, how should I get out through the door?
把門的 is the ones holding the door — the same gatekeepers the old man costed at ten thousand. 出得 keeps 得 as dé, the attainment reading: manage to get out.
To take the demon king inside the cave, I must first clear away the crowd of monsters in front of the gate."
必先除了 is must first be rid of. The logic is a soldier's: the objective is inside, and the problem is not reaching it but leaving.
The reasoning is backwards from the exit, which is how a professional plans an entry. He is not asking how to get in — the disguise handles that. He is asking how to get out if it fails.
And the conclusion is startling in its scale. Before going in at all, clear the gate: ten thousand demons removed as a precaution, not as an objective.
It is also the first time in the chapter that Pilgrim has planned anything. Every previous move was improvised on the spot, brilliantly, and this one is worked out in advance.
