逐句解 Line by line
He ran up behind and called, "You there on the road, wait for me a moment."
走路的 is the one walking — addressing a stranger by what he is doing rather than by name, which is how you hail somebody whose name you are supposed to know.
The little demon turned his head. "Where have you come from?"
那 the second time is nǎ, interrogative — where from. The same question the old man asked the little monk, and the same character, and the same reading.
Pilgrim laughed. "My good fellow, do you not even know your own household?"
一家人 is one household — the word for family used of any group that belongs together, a firm, a regiment, a gang. 認得 takes 得 as de after the negative, the potential form: cannot recognise.
The little demon said, "There is no you in our house."
Eight characters of flat contradiction. The little demon is not suspicious yet; he simply knows the establishment.
Pilgrim's opening move is to claim membership and act injured about it, which puts the burden of proof on the other side. It is a con man's opening and it is very well done.
The word he chooses is the useful one. One household covers family, firm and gang alike, so claiming it commits him to nothing specific while implying everything.
And it fails immediately, on the only ground that matters. The little demon does not argue about faces or accents. He says there is no such person on the strength, which is what an organisation with a roll call can say.
