惟你這國丈 Yours Is The Black One
Line by line
We monks are all of us a single sheet of good heart. It is only this Royal Father-in-Law of yours who has a black heart, and it would do nicely for your conducting medicine.
一片好心, a single sheet of good heart, is still current Chinese for well-meant intentions — you say it when your advice has been thrown back at you. The measure word 片 is for flat things, so the image is of a heart that is all one surface, with nothing folded away behind it. Set against the heap of seventeen, the contrast does itself.
If you do not believe me, let me fetch his out for you and we shall have a look."
The line is delivered as a helpful offer, in the same obliging tone Wukong used when he asked for the knife. He has spent the whole scene co-operating with the court's own logic, and he finishes by volunteering to carry it one step further than anyone wanted.
The argument closes cleanly. A conducting ingredient was wanted; a black heart was specified; Wukong has proved he has not got one and has identified who has. Every step follows from a premise the court supplied. He has not contradicted them once.
This is Wukong's characteristic method against people rather than monsters. With a demon he reaches for the iron rod. With a court he takes their own reasoning, agrees to it with enthusiasm, and follows it until it eats itself. The rod comes out on the next page, but the fight is already lost by then.
