The king, the queens and consorts and every subject of the realm bowed down again.

一應臣民 is yī yìng, meaning the entire body of them — and the reading runs backwards: fixing up to yìng pulls down to . No table can see that happen; only the sandhi check does.

呼呼淅淅 pairs two sound words, one heavy and one thin, for wind going away. The gods leave the way they came, and the chapter has one thing left to do.


總評 Commentary

Wukong's manners with the spirit world are consistent to the end. He summoned them, he thanks them by rank, and he promises them offerings from the people rather than from himself.

The promise is the point. These are gods who live on sacrifice, and what he gives them is a congregation. A kingdom that spent three years being frightened of its own Royal Father-in-Law now has a reason to burn incense to the officials who were too frightened to speak.
