The officers said, "When our sovereign saw the fighting he took fright and hid himself, and we do not know which of the palaces he has gone into."

那座宮 is the questioning 那 again, nǎ — "which palace," not "that palace." In the passage just before this one the same character was nà in 那昏主, that muddled sovereign. One character, two jobs, twenty-one characters apart. 潛藏, to hide oneself away, keeps the sense of submerging — the first character is the one used of diving underwater.

Pilgrim gave the order at once: "Find him quickly, and mind he has not been carried off by that lovely queen."

拐 is the verb for abducting or absconding with someone, and it is still the ordinary word — 拐子 is a kidnapper. It happens to be written with the same character as the crutch-staff the demon has been swinging, which is a coincidence the storyteller may or may not have enjoyed.

Hearing this the officers, making no distinction between inner courts and outer, ran with Pilgrim first to the lovely queen's palace — and it was empty and silent, with not so much as a trace of her; the lovely queen too had entirely vanished.

不分內外 is a small scandal. The inner palace was the women's quarters and male officials did not enter it; the phrase says that in the emergency they simply went in. 同行者 here means "together with Pilgrim," and the 行 is xíng — this is one of the two places in the chapter where the word-boundary falls between 同 and 行者, not before it.

總評 Commentary

The search is over almost before it begins, and the emptiness is the point. Wukong is a beat late: he thinks to warn them about the queen only after she has already gone, and the two disappearances turn out to be one event.

The detail about inner and outer courts is the kind of thing the novel drops without comment and expects the reader to feel. A palace has just had its most rigid boundary walked straight through by a crowd of male officials, and nobody objects, because the household it protected has stopped existing.
