逐句解 Line by line
This evening, just as I was shutting up the shop, at the hour the watches begin, these four horse traders came to take rooms, and they wanted the upper grade of service.
鋪 is pù in 鋪子, a shop — the noun, and not the verb reading the same character takes in the flower verse near the start of this chapter. 更 is gēng again, the night watch, and 將 is jiāng, about to: she was on the point of closing.
I really hoped to make a few mace of silver out of them, but they keep a fast, so there is no money to be made — and that is what I am sighing about."
得 between the verb and its negative reads de: 賺不得 is cannot be earned. 實指望 is really hoped, and the first character makes the disappointment plain.
Her account is exactly accurate and completely wrong. Four horse traders did arrive, they did order the upper grade, and they are not going to make her any money — but not for the reason she thinks.
The mace of silver is the whole scale of the thing. She is disappointed over a sum that Pilgrim, two floors up, has just described as too small to hire a singing girl with.
