行者道：「好好好。」即著幾個客子把櫃擡出，打開蓋兒，請他們下樓。行者道：「好好好。」即着几个客子把柜抬出，打开盖儿，请他们下楼。

Pilgrim said: "Good, good, good."
Six characters, and no thought at all. The tripled word is how eagerness sounds, and it is the same shape the landlady used when she first called them upstairs.
即著幾個客子把櫃擡出，打開蓋兒，請他們下樓。
即着几个客子把柜抬出，打开盖儿，请他们下楼。
So she set some of the hired men to carry the chest out, open the lid, and asked the guests to come down.
著 is zhuó here, the fourth of the four readings this character takes — to set somebody to a task, to dispatch. Not the zhe of an action in progress, nor the zháo of something attained. This is the one that governs a person.
Three characters of agreement and the pilgrims are committed. Pilgrim has spent the whole chapter thinking two moves ahead and accepts this one instantly, because it answers the requirement he set himself.
The men who carry the chest out are the hired hands from the farm — the ones whose chair-pole knocked the floorboards an hour ago. The novel has now put the crew, the box and the cargo in the same yard.
