不當穩便 That Would Not Be Safe

Only this is no place to stop. The light is going, and there will be country folk coming back from selling in the city. If they see we are monks and shout it about, that would not be safe.

Pilgrim thinks like a fugitive, and it is the first sign he has taken the warning seriously. 當 is dàng, fitting or proper, so the phrase is not-proper-and-safe; and because that reading falls in tone, the 不 ahead of it lifts to bú. 將 is jiāng, about to — the sky is about to darken.

僻靜 is out of the way and quiet, the word for a spot nobody passes. The plan starts, as most of Pilgrim's do, with getting Tripitaka out of sight.

總評 Commentary

The danger has changed shape and Pilgrim has noticed before anyone else. It is no longer a monster on the road; it is other travellers with eyes. A shaved head is now the threat, and every peasant coming home from market might inform on them.

This is the moment the chapter commits to its real genre. From here it runs on concealment, cover stories and the fear of being recognised — much closer to a caper than to the demon-fights that surround it.
