A Bare Scalp Showing

We are all worn out. If we fall asleep, and somebody from this household comes up again to clear things away, and sees a cap has rolled off and a bare scalp showing, and knows us for monks, and raises a shout — what then?"
One sentence, five clauses, and each one a step further into the disaster. 著 is zháo in 睡著, the reading for something that happens to you rather than a state you keep: falling asleep, not lying asleep. That is the whole of Tripitaka's fear — the losing of control, not the sleeping.
Pilgrim said: "True enough."
Five characters of capitulation, and no argument at all.
總評 Commentary
Tripitaka has thought it through further than Pilgrim did, and he has thought about the right thing: not being caught, but being caught asleep. A headcloth is a disguise only while its wearer is awake to keep it on.
The scene is the reverse of the usual arrangement. Ordinarily the master frets about a danger and the disciple explains it away. Here the master has spotted the hole and Pilgrim agrees on the spot.
