逐句解 Line by line
Tripitaka and Sha Monk woke suddenly too and said: "Who is it carrying us along?"
甚 is shén, the bare interrogative — what person, who. 忽地 is all at once, suddenly. 著 is zhe: carrying, and still carrying.
Pilgrim said: "Don't shout. Don't shout.
Doubled, the way an urgent instruction is actually said.
Let them carry. Carried all the way to the Western Heaven, and it saves us the walk."
Here is the chapter's other 省得, and it is a different word from the one Pilgrim used at the hollow. There he said he understood the local speech, and the first character read xǐng, to be aware. Here it is shěng, to spare oneself something — saves us the walking. Two characters, two words, one chapter.
Pilgrim's response to being kidnapped is to point out that they are going in roughly the right direction. It is a joke, and it is also the most consistent thing about him: whatever happens, the question is whether it advances the journey.
It does not, of course. The thieves are about to be intercepted and the chest will go east, into the hands of the one authority in the kingdom that must not open it.
