逐句解 Line by line
Pilgrim turned his cloud back at once, and outside the South Heaven Gate he saw the Heavenly King and the prince with the heavenly troops drawn up and waiting.
佈列 is drawn up in formation. The Heavenly King has done exactly what he promised, on time, which nobody in the chapter had any reason to expect. 太子 keeps 子 at the light zi here, since the character stands with 天王 as a plain pair of persons rather than in the full title.
Ai!
The interjection that has been marking the chapter's turns since the first sword-block. Here it turns the story out of heaven and back toward the hole in the ground.
Those divine generals came with the wind rolling and the mist boiling. They caught up the Great Sage and all together plunged down through the cloud head, and were soon on the Mountain of the Empty Trap.
將 is jiàng here, a general — the nominal reading, and this chapter needs it seven times against twenty-five of the disposal marker. 風滾滾 and 霧騰騰 are both doubled, and the doubling is the sound of an army moving: rolling, boiling. English reaches for the same device when it says rolling and roiling.
Bajie and Sha Monk were watching for him with staring eyes when they saw the heavenly troops arrive with Pilgrim.
眼巴巴 is watching and watching with the eyes fixed, and it is still the ordinary word for waiting anxiously. The last time we saw these two, Pilgrim had promised to be back in the time it takes to boil tea.
Heaven arrives as weather. The novel has spent two thousand characters on documents and arguments, and it clears all of that away in one line of rolling wind.
The two disciples have been standing in the road the whole time. From where they are standing, their brother went off to fetch help and has come back with an army, and the intervening lawsuit is something they will never hear about.
