行者道：「繩綑刀砍之事，我也通看你面，還有甚話？你說，你說。說得好，就依你；說得不好，莫怪。」行者道：「绳捆刀砍之事，我也通看你面，还有甚话？你说，你说。说得好，就依你；说得不好，莫怪。」
逐句解 Line by line
Pilgrim said, "After the rope and the blade, I am still giving your face its due. What more have you to say?
通看你面 is to give somebody's face its full weight throughout — Pilgrim is claiming credit for having let the whole thing go so far. 甚 is shén, the what reading clipped from 甚麼, not the shèn of extremely.
Say it, say it.
Four characters, doubled. He is impatient and he is enjoying himself.
Say it well and I shall do as you ask;
得 is de, the toneless join between a verb and how well it came off — said, and said well. It is not the dé of obtaining, which this chapter uses far more often.
say it badly and do not blame me."
The same construction in the negative, and the same de. The two clauses are built as a matched pair, which is how vernacular Chinese does an ultimatum.
Pilgrim grants the hearing on his own terms and makes sure everybody knows the terms are a favour. He has been in the room a very short time as the injured party and has already learned to enjoy it.
The matched pair at the end is worth hearing aloud. Say it well, say it badly — the symmetry does the work that a threat would otherwise have to do.
