In the course of that one year the fiend will have your master shut up in her cave. Never mind the wedding — if there were a child got under the flowers, a small monk would have been born by now, and would that not have ruined the whole undertaking?"
The cruellest sentence in the chapter, and Venus delivers it as arithmetic. 成親 is to be married. 喜花下兒子 is a child conceived under the blossom, the polite phrase for what happens at a wedding, and 子 keeps the light everyday zi. 小和尚兒 is a little monk with a little tag on it too, and the joke is horrible: Tripitaka's chastity is the whole condition of the pilgrimage, and Venus has just calculated the gestation. 中 is zhōng, inside.
The threat to Tripitaka has been sexual since chapter eighty, and the novel has kept it at arm's length with alchemical vocabulary — primal yang, pure yin, the holy embryo. Venus drops all of that and does the sum in months.
It is also the only argument that could possibly move Pilgrim. He does not care about the cost of litigation. He cares that the clock in this room runs three hundred and sixty times faster than the one his master is living under.
