逐句解 Line by line

shuígǎndāngxiān?」 shuígǎndāngxiān?」

Who dares go first?"

當先 is to take the lead, to go at the head — and the question is a formality. Everyone present knows the answer.

xíngzhědào:「dāngxiān。」 xíngzhědào:「dāngxiān。」

Pilgrim said, "I go first."

Six characters, no elaboration at all. This is the only offer in the chapter made without a proverb, a joke or a condition attached.

sāntàidào:「fèngzhǐxiángyāodāngxiān。」 sāntàidào:「fèngzhǐxiángyāodāngxiān。」

The Third Prince said, "I have an edict to subdue the fiend. I go first."

is xiáng, to subdue, and takes . Nezha's claim is procedural — he holds the warrant, so the duty is his. He has been the most correct person in the chapter throughout.

dāizi便biànmǎngzhuàngláigāoshēngjiàodào:「dāngtóuháiyàolǎozhū。」 dāizi便biànmǎngzhuàngláigāoshēngjiàodào:「dāngtóuháiyàolǎozhū。」

The Idiot then blundered in and shouted at the top of his voice, "Old Hog wants the front!"

莽撞 is blundering, rushing in without looking, and it is still the ordinary word for exactly this. 老豬 is what Bajie calls himself when he is pleased with himself — old Hog, on the pattern of Pilgrim's 老孫. is hái, as well, into the bargain.

總評 Commentary

Three volunteers in four lines, and they volunteer in three different registers: plainly, procedurally, and at the top of the voice.

Bajie shouting for the front is the same man who said no, no, no in the first quarter of the chapter and had to be talked into a fight by a joke about wind. He has an army behind him now, which makes all the difference.
