中 is zhòng here, to be struck by or fall into — the sealed chapters read 中了 that way at both their sites, both of them about poison. 機關 is a mechanism, a contrivance, a trap with moving parts.

The Idiot was so appalled that he lay in the grass muttering and grumbling: "That Keeper of the Horses — no idea when to advance and when to fall back."

埋怨 is mán yuàn, to complain — the character reads mái, to bury, everywhere else, and the sealed chapters have it that way at both their sites. 囊囊咄咄 is a four-character mutter. And Bajie has reached for the insult everyone reaches for: the stable job.

總評 Commentary

Note the two words the narrator chooses: 中了機關, he fell into the mechanism. This was not an ambush that happened to work, it was a device — the retreat, the slope, the wind, the true form, the open mouth — and Wukong put away his weapon and walked into it.

不識進退, no sense of when to advance and when to withdraw, is a phrase out of the military classics, and Bajie is using it correctly. He does not know it yet, but he is also wrong: Wukong put the rod away on purpose, and being swallowed is about to turn out better than fighting.
