is xiāng, mutually — the gap between them closing. 迎著 takes the light zhe. And 現了原身 is the moment the fight stops being a duel: he has been fighting in a man's shape with a sabre, and this is the lion.

Bajie took fright and dived into the grass, caring nothing for the thorns and brambles, minding nothing for the scraped and aching head, and lay there trembling, listening for the sound of the clapper.

is zuān, the verb — to bore in — and it is the fifteenth of nineteen in this chapter. Both 不得 take the light de. 聽著 takes zhe, and the detail is exact: he cannot see anything from under the grass, so he listens.


總評 Commentary

The retreat was a trap and Bajie is the one who works it out, in the only way available to him — by being frightened enough to hide. The book gives him no credit for it and no blame either; he simply dives, and the thorns are described in more detail than his cowardice.

聽著梆聲 is the small heartbreaking touch. The clapper is the scout's rattle, the one Wukong took off the body in the previous chapter and unslung at the demons' hall. Lying blind in the undergrowth, Bajie is listening for the sound of demons on patrol.
