逐句解 Line by line
"And when did you turn to the right path?" said Vairambha. "My congratulations, my congratulations."
恭喜 is exactly the modern word — the one shouted at New Year in 恭喜發財 — and doubled here it is the ordinary warmth of somebody hearing good news about an acquaintance. The tenth doubled utterance in the chapter. She is the first person in five thousand characters to be pleased for him.
"Not long ago I got my life back," said Pilgrim, "and I am guarding my master Tripitaka on his way west to fetch the scriptures. My master met the Daoist of the Yellow Flower Abbey, and was drugged down with poisoned tea."
⚠ 藥倒 for the fifth and last time in the chapter, with 倒 as dǎo. Five occurrences and every one is a report by somebody to somebody else; the poisoning itself was narrated once, and without this phrase. 脫命 is to get free with your life. 觀 is guàn, the abbey.
Two lines, and the second one carries the whole errand. She asks a polite social question — when did you convert — and he answers it and then immediately explains why he is here, in one breath, with no transition. That is a man on a three-day clock being as patient as he can manage.
恭喜，恭喜 deserves its moment. Nobody else in this chapter has been glad about anything. The Daoist was pleased once, when he learned who his guests were, and the text called it spring breaking out over his face. Here somebody hears that a former rebel has taken orders and simply says congratulations, twice.
And then the phrase 藥倒 for the last time. Five uses across the chapter — Pilgrim to the earth god, Pilgrim to the widow, Pilgrim to the Old Mother, the Old Mother back to him, and now this. It has become the standing shorthand for what happened, the way a family develops a phrase for a disaster.
