Fine Great Sage! He did not stay to drink the wine of his merit, but mounted his somersault cloud, gave a single whistle, and was on Qilin Mountain again.

得功酒 is the wine for merit gained, with 得 at dé, to gain — the seventh time this chapter has put merit into somebody's mouth, and the ninth appearance of the character. 斗 is dǒu in the name of the somersault cloud, not the dòu of fighting.

He had no mind for the view, and went straight off to look for the cave.

無心玩景 — no mind for the view — is a pointed line. The last time he stood on this mountain he looked and looked and could not get tired of it, and was still admiring it when the fire came out of the ground underneath him.

As he went he heard a clamour of voices, and he stopped where he stood and fixed his eyes to look.

聽得 takes dé, the perceiving-verb reading. 佇立凝睛 is to halt where you stand and hold the gaze steady — and once again the ear brings the information first and the eyes follow it.

總評 Commentary

The return is told in three sentences and each one subtracts something. He does not drink; he does not look at the mountain; he does not keep walking. What is left is a man standing still on a slope with his eyes fixed — which is exactly where the last visit started, and how badly that went is why this one is different.

The wine is refused for the third time in the chapter, and this refusal is the only one that costs him nothing: it is offered in his absence and he is simply not there. Whatever the king does with the warmed cup, the narrative has stopped following it.
