is after — never managed to. Her 今已三年, three years now, is the chapter's third statement of the interval: the courier said three years ago in one scene and since the year before last in another, and she agrees with the first of them.

is cháng, the counting word for something that runs its course, and 這場夫妻 counts a marriage the way one counts a battle or a rainstorm — the third of the chapter's four such uses.

"But who would have thought the Great King held me at arm's length and would not treat me as a wife?

外我 is to put me outside, to hold me at a distance, and it is the hinge of the whole speech — she uses it three times across a hundred and sixty-four characters and the argument rests on it entirely.


總評 Commentary

The complaint she opens with is the true one, and she can make it precisely because it is true. Years, and never a pillow shared — the demon knows it better than she does and has just explained why, in front of her. She is not lying to him yet.

What she does is reclassify the fact. The failure is not a robe with needles in it; it is his coldness, a deliberate keeping of her at arm's length. Turning a physical impossibility into a slight is the move of the whole speech — because a slight is the sort of thing a man can put right.
