逐句解 Line by line
Pilgrim did not pursue him for the present, but pressed his cloud-head down and came to the mouth of the pit outside the demon shelter, where he called: "Master, be pleased to come out, and bring His Majesty with you. The creature has been driven off."
且 is for the moment, for now — Wukong's decision not to chase is offered as provisional, and he comes back to it before the scene ends. 按下雲頭 is the standing phrase for bringing a cloud down to ground level, the exact reverse of mounting one. 矣 closes the sentence in the literary register, which is how Wukong talks when a monk and a king are both listening.
Only then did the Tang Monk help the sovereign up, and together they came out of the pit.
才 marks the delay — not until the all-clear had been given. 著 in 扶著 is the zhe of an action held in progress: the support is being maintained all the way up out of the hole, not the zháo of a result achieved once and finished with.
They saw the whole sky bright and clear, with not a breath of fiendish vapour left in it.
更 is gèng, further, still, and with 無 it makes an emphatic none-at-all. Notice what they check. Not the light but the air: 氣 is the residue a fiend leaves behind it, and its absence is what satisfies them. In this book monsters have a smell, and reading it is a skill the sentence credits to the monk and the king rather than to Wukong.
The chapter's first movement closes where it opened, in the air, and the transition is handled in a single verb. Wukong presses his cloud down; the king is helped up out of a pit. Neither party remarks on the vertical distance between them, which is the whole characterisation of the scene.
What the two of them do on getting out is verify. They look at the sky, and the thing that reassures them is not that it is bright but that a particular vapour has gone.
