逐句解 Line by line
Pilgrim said: "Your Majesty is close at hand — what use is there in grieving?
The frame here is the classical 何以 … 為, with the thing in question dropped in the middle: what is the use of it. 為 closes the frame and is wéi — the third appearance of that character in a short stretch, returning to the reading the first one took. Note the register jump: Wukong answers a poem in literary Chinese, and that is the only concession he makes to it.
"If the lady left no token, then was there anything in the palace she held dear? One such thing given me would serve."
罷 is bà inside 也罷, that will do — not the toneless word it becomes elsewhere. The request gets downgraded twice inside one sentence: not a keepsake now but merely something she was fond of, and not all of it but one piece.
The king said: "What do you want it for?"
Seven characters, own he-said, own quotation closed: the unit stands alone however short. It is the second question the king has put to Wukong that is not about the fiend — the first was why a man with such powers should look like a monkey.
Wukong does not console. He points out that the king is present and alive, asks what grieving is for, and moves straight on to the next request.
Then the retreat, handled like a negotiation. No keepsake? Then anything she was fond of. All of it? No — one piece will do. Each fallback is smaller than the last, and the king is never told why any of it matters, which is finally what makes him ask.
