逐句解 Line by line
The king said, "Since the two elders will have no men and horses, will they have weapons?"
那 is the pointing one here, four segments after two that ask questions. The king is still trying to equip an expedition, and this is the third time he is refused. 不 lifts to bú before the falling tone of 用.
Eight Rules laughed. "Your weapons are no use to us. My brother and I have our own arms about us."
用不得 is the cannot-be-done shape and takes the light linking de. 隨身器械, arms carried on the body, is a plain statement and also a boast: a rake got from heaven, and a rod that used to be the pillar holding down the eastern sea.
When the king heard that he sent at once for a great goblet, to drink the two elders on their way.
觥 is a large horn-shaped wine vessel. Having failed to give them troops or weapons, the king offers the one thing a host has left.
Sun the Great Sage said, "No more wine. Only have the Embroidered-Uniform Guard bring out the two small fiends. We will take them along to work through."
做鑿眼 comes back from the pagoda, where Pilgrim first gave it as his reason for not killing them. The phrase turns up nowhere else in the archive, and both of its appearances are his.
The king gave the order, and they were brought out at once.
Eight characters, a short narrator clause standing on its own. The prisoners the chapter caught on a roof at midnight are now state property, produced under warrant and handed over.
Three offers are made and three are turned down: no troops, no weapons, no stirrup-cup. The king has nothing these two want and keeps trying to give it to them anyway, which is the most sympathetic he has been in the whole chapter.
What Pilgrim does want is the prisoners, and he asks for them in the same words he used on the tenth storey — something to work through, the way you work through a chisel-hole to reach what is behind it. The creatures he spared for their evidence are now going along as guides, which is exactly what he said they were for.
