虎咽狼吞 Tiger Gulp And Wolf Swallow
Line by line
Just look at Eight Rules opening his gullet — truly it was a tiger's gulp and a wolf's swallow — and a whole table of fruit and greens he ate up to the last crumb.
你看 is the storyteller turning round to the audience — just look at him — the same gesture as 好猴王 and 好獃子 earlier. 吃得罄盡 is a verb with 得 carrying a result after it, so the 得 is the light linking one, against 聽得 in the sentence before, which is an attainment and takes dé.
In a little while fresh soup and rice were brought to replace it, and again he ate until not a hair's weight was left.
一毫不剩 — not a hair's weight left. The 一 comes out yì before the rising tone of 毫, and the 不 lifts to bú before the falling tone of 剩.
When those going round with the wine came by, he refused not a single cup.
杯杯不辭 is a doubled frame with full tones at both syllables — cup after cup, and he turned none of them down. Nine characters, and they finish off the account of what Eight Rules did at a state banquet.
This banquet went merrily on until after noon before it broke up.
樂 takes lè here, to enjoy oneself, which is the other half of the character from the yuè of 動樂 four segments back. 午後方散 puts the whole of the morning into eleven characters and closes the scene.
Four sentences on Eight Rules eating, which is more attention than the release of the monks received. He clears a table, has it refilled, clears it again, and takes every cup that comes past him at a banquet where his own master will not drink.
The comedy is entirely uncensured and it is doing a job. The chapter has just spent its length on a wrong, an investigation and a pardon, and now spends sixty characters on a pig at a state dinner before ending the morning. This novel will not stay solemn for long.
