Now Eight Rules had fallen till his head was thick and his wits were dull. He looked up sharply, saw that silk tent and silk cords were both gone, and only then went a step and a feel, a step and a feel, crawled up onto his feet, bore the pain and found his way back the way he had come.

Pilgrim said, "What happened to you?"

Seven characters, flat. Pilgrim declined this errand, watched his brother go alone, and asks the question without a word of I-told-you-so.

總評 Commentary

He comes back feeling his way a step at a time, and the first thing he says is a question about his own face.

That is the character in one line. Not what happened, not the master is still in there, not they beat me — is my head swollen? Anybody who has come off a bicycle and immediately checked a mirror knows the instinct.

Pilgrim's reply is worth noticing for what it leaves out. He argued against this, lost the argument, and refused to go along. He now has every opening for a told-you-so and asks instead what happened.
