夫妻重逢 Husband and Wife Reunited

Guangrui said, 'Why are you all here?'

為何, why — 為 here is wèi.

小xiǎo姐jiě道dào：「因yīn汝rǔ被bèi賊zéi人rén打dǎ死sǐ，後hòu來lái妾qiè身shēn生shēng下xià此cǐ子zǐ，小xiǎo姐jiě道dào：「因yīn汝rǔ被bèi贼zéi人rén打dǎ死sǐ，后hòu来lái妾qiè身shēn生shēng下xià此cǐ子zǐ，

The lady said, 'Because you were beaten to death by the villain, I later bore this child;'

妾身, 'this handmaid,' a wife's humble self-reference; 此子, this son — 子 = zǐ.

幸xìng遇yù金jīn山shān寺sì長zhǎng老lǎo撫fǔ養yǎng長zhǎng大dà，尋xún我wǒ相xiāng會huì，我wǒ教jiào他tā去qù尋xún外wài公gōng。幸xìng遇yù金jīn山shān寺sì长zhǎng老lǎo抚fǔ养yǎng长zhǎng大dà，寻xún我wǒ相xiāng会huì，我wǒ教jiào他tā去qù寻xún外wài公gōng。

'happily he was taken in and raised by the abbot of Gold Mountain Monastery, grew up, and sought me out; I bade him go find his grandfather.'

撫養長大, reared to adulthood; 相會, to be reunited — reciprocal 相 (xiāng).

父fù親qīn得dé知zhī，奏zòu聞wén朝cháo廷tíng，統tǒng兵bīng到dào此cǐ，拿ná住zhù賊zéi人rén，適shì才cái生shēng取qǔ心xīn肝gān，望wàng空kōng祭jì奠diàn我wǒ夫fū。父fù亲qīn得dé知zhī，奏zòu闻wén朝cháo廷tíng，统tǒng兵bīng到dào此cǐ，拿ná住zhù贼zéi人rén，适shì才cái生shēng取qǔ心xīn肝gān，望wàng空kōng祭jì奠diàn我wǒ夫fū。

'My father, learning of it, memorialized the throne, led troops here, seized the villain, just now cut out his heart and liver, and made sacrifice to you, my husband, into the empty air.'

奏聞朝廷, to memorialize the court; 生取心肝, to cut out the heart and liver alive.

不bù知zhī我wǒ夫fū怎zěn生shēng又yòu得dé還huán魂hún？」不bù知zhī我wǒ夫fū怎zěn生shēng又yòu得dé还huán魂hún？」

'But I do not know — how is it that my husband has come back to life?'

怎生又得還魂, how [he] came again to return the soul — 還 is huán.

光guāng蕊ruǐ道dào：「皆jiē因yīn我wǒ與yǔ你nǐ昔xī年nián在zài萬wàn花huā店diàn時shí，買mǎi放fàng了le那nà尾wěi金jīn色sè鯉lǐ魚yú，光guāng蕊ruǐ道dào：「皆jiē因yīn我wǒ与yǔ你nǐ昔xī年nián在zài万wàn花huā店diàn时shí，买mǎi放fàng了le那nà尾wěi金jīn色sè鲤lǐ鱼yú，

Guangrui said, 'It is all because, years ago, when you and I were at the Myriad Flowers Inn, we bought and released that golden carp;'

昔年, in years past; 那尾金色鯉魚, that golden carp.

誰shuí知zhī那nà鯉lǐ魚yú就jiù是shì此cǐ處chù龍lóng王wáng。谁shuí知zhī那nà鲤lǐ鱼yú就jiù是shì此cǐ处chù龙lóng王wáng。

'who would have known that the carp was none other than the Dragon King of this place?'

此處龍王, the Dragon King of these waters.

後hòu來lái逆nì賊zéi把bǎ我wǒ推tuī在zài水shuǐ中zhōng，全quán虧kuī得dé他tā救jiù我wǒ。后hòu来lái逆nì贼zéi把bǎ我wǒ推tuī在zài水shuǐ中zhōng，全quán亏kuī得dé他tā救jiù我wǒ。

'Later, when the traitor pushed me into the water, it was entirely thanks to him that I was saved.'

逆賊, the treacherous villain; 全虧得, entirely owing to.

方fāng才cái又yòu賜cì我wǒ還huán魂hún，送sòng我wǒ寶bǎo物wù，俱jù在zài身shēn上shàng。方fāng才cái又yòu赐cì我wǒ还huán魂hún，送sòng我wǒ宝bǎo物wù，俱jù在zài身shēn上shàng。

'Just now he has granted me back my soul and given me treasures besides, all here on my person.'

賜我還魂, bestowed my return to life; 寶物, precious gifts — 還 is huán.

更gèng不bù想xiǎng你nǐ生shēng下xià這zhè兒ér子zi，又yòu得dé岳yuè丈zhàng為wèi我wǒ報bào仇chóu。更gèng不bù想xiǎng你nǐ生shēng下xià这zhè儿ér子zi，又yòu得dé岳yuè丈zhàng为wèi我wǒ报bào仇chóu。

'Little did I think you had borne this son, and that my father-in-law would avenge me.'

這兒子, this son (子 neutral); 為我報仇, to avenge me — 為 here is wèi.

真zhēn是shì苦kǔ盡jìn甘gān來lái，莫mò大dà之zhī喜xǐ。」真zhēn是shì苦kǔ尽jìn甘gān来lái，莫mò大dà之zhī喜xǐ。」

'Truly, bitterness ended and sweetness come — a joy beyond all measure.'

苦盡甘來, bitterness exhausted, sweetness arriving — a set phrase for hardship yielding to happiness.

總評 Commentary

The reunion turns on a double recognition delivered as mutual narration: the wife recounts the eighteen years the husband slept through — the posthumous son, the monastery, the search, the vengeance — while the husband supplies the one piece she cannot know, that the golden carp they released at the Myriad Flowers Inn was the Dragon King who preserved him. The two halves of the chapter's plot, the human and the supernatural, are here explicitly stitched together, and the long chain of cause and consequence resolves into a proverb: 苦盡甘來, bitterness ended and sweetness come. The recapitulation also serves the reader, gathering the chapter's scattered strands into a single retrospective whole.
