金聖宮 The Golden Sage Palace

The king said, "Ours are not styled so. We call the Principal Palace the Golden Sage Palace, the Eastern the Jade Sage Palace, the Western the Silver Sage Palace.

Gold, jade and silver, in descending order of worth — the naming itself ranks them, and the first of the three is the one that is missing. 稱為 takes wéi at all three occurrences, and 將 is jiāng, taking an object forward.

現xiàn今jīn只zhǐ有yǒu銀yín、玉yù二èr后hòu在zài宮gōng。」现xiàn今jīn只zhǐ有yǒu银yín、玉yù二èr后hòu在zài宫gōng。」

"At present only the Silver and the Jade are in the palace."

The whole long approach has been building to this omission, and he states it as an inventory rather than a loss.

行xíng者zhě道dào：「金jīn聖shèng宮gōng因yīn何hé不bú在zài宮gōng中zhōng？」行xíng者zhě道dào：「金jīn圣shèng宫gōng因yīn何hé不bú在zài宫gōng中zhōng？」

Pilgrim said, "Why is the Golden Sage Palace not in the palace?"

Pilgrim asks the moment the gap appears — which is exactly what the king has spent four exchanges arranging for him to do. 中 is zhōng.

總評 Commentary

And here the circling pays off. This kingdom does not use the ordinary titles at all: its consorts are the Golden, the Jade and the Silver Sage Palace. Gold, jade, silver — the naming ranks them before anybody says a word about which one is missing.

Then the omission, stated as an inventory: at present only the Silver and the Jade are in the palace. He has spent four exchanges arranging matters so that Pilgrim would be the one to ask about the gap, and Pilgrim asks immediately.
