大賢大德 A Worthy And Virtuous King

Now Pilgrim, up in the hall of the Hostel of Meeting, called to Pig Eight Rules: "Just now I allowed him water fallen from the sky before the medicine could be taken. But we are in a hurry — where is rainwater to be got?

The condition he invented has become his own problem: he insisted on water from the sky, and now the medicine cannot be taken until some falls. 怎麼得 takes the full dé, to get hold of. 落 is luò.

我wǒ看kàn這zhè王wáng倒dào也yě是shì個gè大dà賢xián大dà德dé之zhī君jūn，我wǒ與yǔ你nǐ助zhù他tā些xiē兒er雨yǔ下xià藥yào，如rú何hé？」我wǒ看kàn这zhè王wáng倒dào也yě是shì个gè大dà贤xián大dà德dé之zhī君jūn，我wǒ与yǔ你nǐ助zhù他tā些xiē儿er雨yǔ下xià药yào，如rú何hé？」

"I take this king to be, after all, a lord of great worth and great virtue. Let you and me help him to a little rain to get the medicine down. What do you say?"

The only compliment the king gets in the whole chapter, and it is grudging — after all a lord of great worth. That is what 倒 does here, at dào: it flags something turning out contrary to expectation. 兒 is the light suffix.

總評 Commentary

The condition Pilgrim invented has become Pilgrim's problem. He insisted on water fallen from the sky, the court has gone off to pray for it, and the medicine cannot be taken until some arrives.

The solution comes in the same breath as the only compliment the king receives in the whole chapter, and it is grudging — after all a lord of great worth and great virtue. Pilgrim has held this court in open contempt for several passages. Here he concedes, once, and immediately arranges to help.
