逐句解 Line by line
The excellent Great Sage paced out the Dipper steps and recited a spell, and at once a black cloud appeared in the due east and came gradually up overhead.
The whole summoning takes one sentence. 罡訣 is the ritual pacing of the Dipper — the officiant treads out the pattern of the constellation on the ground — and it is a standard Daoist procedure, not an invention. 那 is nà.
A voice called, "Great Sage — Ao Guang, Dragon King of the Eastern Ocean, comes to see you."
The cloud announces itself. Nobody has told him yet why he was called.
Pilgrim said, "I would not presume to trouble you without cause. I have asked you here to help with a little rootless water, to get a medicine down a king."
捻煩 is the everyday phrase for putting somebody to trouble. The request is beautifully courteous and is, in substance, a summons already obeyed.
The actual summoning takes one sentence: pace out the Dipper steps, recite a spell, and a black cloud comes up in the east. After all the elaborate positioning of the previous scene, the working of it is dispatched in a line.
Ao Guang announces himself from inside the cloud before anyone has told him why he was called, and Pilgrim frames the request as a courtesy — he would not presume to trouble him without cause. Both parties are being extremely polite about what is, underneath, a Dragon King ordered across the sky to help a monkey get a pill down.
