一人有福 One Man Has Luck

Now Eight Rules, seeing the officer deliver the card, could not contain his delight. "Brother," he said, "it really was a marvellous medicine.

His measure of the whole affair is characteristic: not that the king recovered, but that a dinner has resulted. 投簡 is the delivery of the written card.

今jīn來lái酬chóu謝xiè，乃nǎi兄xiōng長zhǎng之zhī功gōng。」今jīn来lái酬chóu谢xiè，乃nǎi兄xiōng长zhǎng之zhī功gōng。」

"This thanksgiving is elder brother's doing."

The credit is handed over generously and, as the next line shows, prematurely. 長 is zhǎng in 兄長, elder brother.

Sha the monk said, "What sort of talk is that, second brother? As the common saying goes: when one man has luck, he carries a whole household along with him.

The proverb does more work than it looks. One man's luck carries a whole household — which concedes that the luck was Pilgrim's and claims the dinner anyway. 那裡話 — what sort of talk is that — takes nǎ. 帶挈 is to pull somebody along in your wake.

總評 Commentary

Eight Rules sees the invitation delivered and is delighted, and his measure of the whole affair is characteristic: not that the king recovered but that a banquet has resulted. He then hands his brother the entire credit, generously and unasked.

Sha the monk will not have it, and the proverb he answers with is cleverer than it looks. When one man has luck he carries a whole household along with him — which concedes that the luck was Pilgrim's and claims a share of the dinner anyway.
