Pilgrim said, "This is no place to compound medicine. Have the whole tally of drugs, and every vessel needed for compounding them, sent over to the Hostel of Meeting and delivered to my two brothers to take in."

Note where he sends it all. Not the palace — the hostel, where his own brothers will take delivery and no court official will be standing over the work. He gives no reason, and the reason turns out to matter. 會同館 is the state guest-house for foreign envoys, which is where the pilgrims have been lodged. 一應 is the everyday "the whole set of", and its 一 shifts tone in the ordinary way before the level tone that follows.

The medical officer obeyed. The eight hundred and eight flavours, three catties of each, together with drug-rollers, drug-mills, drug-sieves and drug-grinders, with mortars and pestles and the rest, were all sent over to the hostel and handed over one item at a time until the receipt was complete.

Here is the joke made visible: eight hundred and eight ingredients at three catties apiece, plus rollers, mills, sieves, grinders, mortars and pestles, carried across the city and signed for item by item. 磨 is mò here, the mill itself, not mó, the act of grinding — everything else in the list is a piece of equipment, and 康熙 files the object under its own falling-tone reading, glossed 石磑也, a millstone. 一一, one by one, is fixed and keeps yī yī on both halves.
