Pilgrim laughed and said, "That monster is not really out to harm you;

還 is hái, really.

"if he wanted to harm you, how could you hide down here?"

Unanswerable, and cruel. Four months of building work demolished in one line, standing at the mouth of the thing with the man who ordered it. 躲得 takes the light de of possibility.

Even as he spoke, there came from due south a howling wind that flung up the earth and raised the dust.

正說間 — in the very act of speaking. The narrator hangs the wind on the end of Pilgrim's sentence with no transition whatever. 吹得風響 takes the light de before its result, and 的 is the light de.

總評 Commentary

Pilgrim's remark is unanswerable and it is cruel. The monster is not really trying to harm you — because if he were, what good would this hole be? Four months of building work demolished in a line, standing at the mouth of the thing with the man who ordered it.

And then, in the very act of speaking, the wind comes from due south. The narrator hangs it on the end of Pilgrim's sentence with no transition at all.
