"Decoct the six, send this medicine down with it, and your king's anxious sickness will be gone on the instant."

A balanced pair of seven characters against seven, and it reads exactly like verse — but the edition sets it as prose, with none of the indentation it uses for a poem, so prose it stays. 憂病 ties the promise straight back to the diagnosis: fright and anxious brooding.

總評 Commentary

The six ingredients climb steadily out of reach: a crow's fart caught in mid-air, the urine of a carp breasting a current, the Queen Mother's face powder, ash from Lord Lao's furnace, three pieces of the Jade Emperor's worn-out headcloth, and five whiskers from a fettered dragon. The first two are merely impossible; by the end he is asking heaven to be burgled.

The first two are the ones to watch. A bird's wind and a fish's water are very nearly what is in the pills already, and he has put them at the head of a list designed to be refused. He is describing his own prescription and daring the court to notice.

The closing couplet promises the cure on the instant, and hooks it back to the diagnosis — the king's anxious sickness, named on the first day. It reads as verse and is set as prose, because the edition indents nothing here, and in this text the printer's own layout decides.
