I and that Quanzhen adept walked hand in hand at a slow pace, until we came to the garden, and of a sudden reached the eight-cornered glazed-tile well; I know not what he cast down into it, but within the well there rose ten thousand shafts of golden light.

那 (nà) deictic; 甚麼 (shén me) "what"; 井中 (jǐng zhōng) "within the well"; 八角琉璃井 (bā jiǎo liú lí jǐng) the "eight-cornered glazed-tile well." 行 (xíng) here "to go, proceed."

He coaxed me to the well’s edge to look at some treasure; then, his cruel heart rising, with a splash he pushed me, the solitary one, down into the well, laid a stone slab over its mouth, heaped earth upon it, and moved a plantain to plant above.

甚麼 (shén me) "what"; 將石板蓋住 (jiāng shí bǎn gài zhù) "took the stone slab and covered [it]," disposal 將 = jiāng; 芭蕉 (bā jiāo) "plantain."

Pity me — three years already dead, a wronged ghost drowned in a well, my life cut short.”

冤屈之鬼 (yuān qū zhī guǐ) "a ghost of wrong and injustice"; 傷生 (shāng shēng) "to have one’s life destroyed."

總評 Commentary

The murder is told with terrible economy: the false brother lures the king with a golden radiance rising from the well — a lure that is also a first glimpse of the adept’s true, unnatural power — and drowns him at the instant of his trust. The eight-cornered glazed-tile well becomes the chapter’s central image, at once the scene of the crime and the hidden grave.

The concealment is methodical — stone slab, heaped earth, a plantain transplanted over the mouth — the transplanted tree marking the spot even as it hides it, a detail the plot will later turn upon. The king closes his account by naming himself a wronged ghost, three years drowned, which turns his narration from lament into petition.
