免你一死 That You May Escape Death
五龍、二將相貌崢嶸，精神抖擻，喝道：「那潑怪！我乃武當山太和宮混元教主蕩魔天尊之前五位龍神、龜蛇二將。今蒙齊天大聖相邀，我天尊符召，到此捕你。你這妖精，快送唐僧與天星等出來，免你一死；不然，將這一山之怪碎劈其屍，幾間之房燒為灰燼。」五龙、二将相貌峥嵘，精神抖擞，喝道：「那泼怪！我乃武当山太和宫混元教主荡魔天尊之前五位龙神、龟蛇二将。今蒙齐天大圣相邀，我天尊符召，到此捕你。你这妖精，快送唐僧与天星等出来，免你一死；不然，将这一山之怪碎劈其尸，几间之房烧为灰烬。」
逐句解 Line by line
The five dragons and the two generals, imposing of aspect and brisk of spirit, shouted, "You wretched fiend!
將 is jiàng, generals, and 相 is xiàng in 相貌, outward appearance. 喝 is hè, to shout somebody down — not hē, to drink.
We are the five dragon gods and the two generals Tortoise and Snake, from before the Heaven-Honoured One Who Sweeps Away Demons, Lord of the Undifferentiated Origin, of the Palace of Great Harmony on Mount Wudang.
A single title fourteen characters long, running mountain, palace, doctrinal style and divine name in one breath before the speakers get round to who they are. It is the celestial equivalent of reading out the letterhead. 將 is again jiàng.
Today at the Great Sage Equal to Heaven's invitation, and by our Heaven-Honoured One's talisman-summons, we are come here to take you.
相 is xiāng here, meaning mutually, in 相邀 — a different reading from the 相貌 two segments earlier, and the chapter uses both inside one speech.
You fiend, send out the Tang Monk and the star-gods and the rest at once, that you may escape death;
The edition cuts here at a semicolon and the two halves are kept apart: the second one escalates from sparing a life to hacking up corpses, and the two do not match each other in shape.
otherwise we shall hack the fiends of this whole mountain to pieces and burn these few halls of yours to ashes."
將 is jiāng, the object-shunter, not the jiàng of the generals three segments back — same character, four appearances, two jobs. 為 is wéi, to become.
The dragons' speech is built like a warrant being served. First the issuing authority in full, then the two commissions they act under, then the demand, then the penalty for refusal. There is no boasting in it anywhere; every clause is about jurisdiction.
That is the point of the fourteen-character title. These are not freelance champions but the household of a named god acting on a named summons, and they say so before they say who they are. The fiend asked from what quarter, and has been answered at considerably more length than he wanted.
The character 相 does two different jobs inside this one speech — the look they present, and the invitation they accepted. A small reminder that this chapter's difficulties are as often about words as about fighting.
