Pilgrim looked as he went, and came straight to the foot of the second gate.
The sentence pairs two verbs with 且 in front of each — looking and walking at once, which keeps him sightseeing right up to the door.
那國師王菩薩早已知之,即與小張太子出門迎迓。
那国师王菩萨早已知之,即与小张太子出门迎迓。
The Bodhisattva King and Preceptor of the Realm knew of it already, and came out of the gate with the Little Prince Zhang to welcome him.
太子 is tài zǐ with a full second syllable, the literary compound. 早已知之 — he knew already — is the standard mark of a genuine adept in this novel, and it spares Monkey the announcing he had to do at Wudang.
The reception at Wudang took six segments — three gates, five hundred officers, a sentry who did not recognise him, and a god who came down off his dais. Here it takes two, and nobody challenges him at all.
Knowing already does the work. This Bodhisattva sees what is coming before it arrives, which is a higher grade of competence than Wudang displayed, and the brevity is itself a compliment. It also means Monkey's long account, when he gives it, is strictly unnecessary — and he gives it anyway.
