Digging And Pounding
Line by line
Pilgrim was bitter with hatred, and gave a fist to the left and a foot to the right, digging and pounding away inside.
十分恨苦, bitter with hatred, is the reason given — and it is the only motive anywhere in the chapter that is simply anger.
The monster, in pain past all bearing, fell to the ground.
倒 is dǎo, to fall. 萬分 answers the 十分 of the segment before: ten parts of hatred against ten thousand of pain.
Maitreya said again, "Wukong, he has had enough — let him be."
又 — again — records that the first request was ignored. 罷 is the softening ba.
Only then did Pilgrim call, "Open your mouth wide and let Old Monkey out."
才 — only then — marks how long it took. Monkey stops on the second asking, not the first.
總評 Commentary
Maitreya has to ask twice, and the narrative is careful to say so. For the sake of my face produced more digging; he has had enough produced compliance, and even that is marked with an only-then.
It is the one moment in the chapter where Monkey disobeys a divinity, and he does it to a Buddha who has just retrieved everything he lost. The chapter has spent its whole length on his deference — bows, apologies, calling himself a disciple — and he spends the credit here, on a few extra blows.
