When they had met and the courtesies were done, Pilgrim said, "I am escorting the Tang Monk to fetch scriptures in the Western Heaven. On the road there is a Monastery of Little Thunderclap, and in it a Yellow-Brow fiend who counterfeits the Buddha Patriarch.

is xiāng, mutually, in 相見. 假充 — passing himself off as — states the offence plainly, where the earlier telling described the trap and left the reader to infer it.

My master could not tell the true from the false; he knelt at once, and was taken.

Fourteen characters for what took thirty-four when he told the god of Wudang. Monkey has learnt to be brief.

He clapped his golden cymbals over me besides, and it was owing to Heaven's sending down the star-gods that I got out.

is jiàng here, to send down, against the xiáng of subduing that the same character takes elsewhere in this chapter — Heaven sent the star-gods down, it did not subdue them.

I smashed the cymbals and fought him for it, and he brought out a cloth bundle and bagged the whole lot — the heavenly gods, the guardians, the monastery-protectors, my master and my fellow-disciples.

here is the character for combat, kept distinct in this edition from the of the somersault cloud. The chapter carries both and never confuses them, which is what makes the earlier reading secure.

總評 Commentary

This is the third telling of the story and the shortest. To the god of Wudang it ran twelve segments; here it runs four, and whole episodes — the Twenty-Eight Mansions, Kang the Golden Dragon and his horn, the night escape, the return for the robe and bowl — have vanished.

What survives the compression is instructive. Monkey keeps the counterfeit, the cymbals, the bundle and the roll of the captured; he drops every part in which he himself acted. The version a stranger gets has no so he left in it.

He also states the charge differently. To Wudang he described what happened; here he opens with 假充佛祖, impersonating the Buddha — which is the offence most likely to move a Buddhist establishment, and he is standing in one.
