The Idiot, who had hung there several days and was faint with hunger, did not stop to thank the Great Sage but bent his back like a shrimp and ran off to the kitchen to look for something to eat.

得 is the unstressed particle in 餓得慌, marking the result — so hungry he was faint. 蝦著腰, bent like a shrimp, is the chapter's only purely comic image.

He does feed the others, and only after eating half a pot himself. The order of operations is the joke.

Seven characters, and the second only-then of the passage — gratitude arrives third, behind hunger and hospitality.

總評 Commentary

After a chapter of gods, warrants, hymns and celestial protocol, the release of the pilgrims is followed immediately by a man going to look for lunch. The novel does this deliberately and it does it at the point of maximum solemnity.

The passage is built on the word 才, only then, which appears twice and orders the whole sequence: only then were they cut down, and only after eating did he give thanks. Between those two markers Pigsy eats half a pot, serves out two bowls each, and finally remembers his rescuer.

It is also a small piece of narrative economy. The fiend's untouched midday meal has been sitting there since Monkey's challenge two scenes ago, and the chapter has kept it in reserve for exactly this.
