Clawing Gut And Scraping Belly
Line by line
Pilgrim seized the chance, rolled straight down past the throat, and without waiting to see how things stood set to work with hands and feet — clawing at the guts, scraping the belly, turning somersaults and standing on his head, doing as he pleased in there.
咽 is yān, the throat — not the yàn of swallowing, which the same character takes in other compounds. 乘 is chéng, to seize a chance, against the shèng of the Three Vehicles earlier in the chapter, and 得 is toneless here, in 等不得 — could not wait.
The fiend was in such pain that his teeth were bared and his mouth twisted and his eyes ran with tears, and he rolled a whole patch of melon ground into something like a threshing floor.
場 is chǎng here — 打麥之場 is a threshing floor, a real place, and the character takes the rising tone in that sense. Both 得 are toneless, marking a result.
He only cried out, "It is over, it is over — will nobody save me?"
罷了 is read bà le, a fixed phrase meaning it is all over. The fiend's cry — will nobody save me — is the question Monkey has been asking the whole chapter, now in the mouth of the one who caused it.
The fight the chapter could not win from outside is won from inside in three segments, and it is won without a weapon. Monkey's rod is not mentioned; he uses hands and feet, and the verbs are those of a child at play — somersaults and handstands — performed in a stomach.
The melon patch rolled into a threshing floor is the chapter's best single image. Maitreya planted that ground as a trap and the fiend has flattened it in his agony, and the comparison turns a scene of planting into one of harvest.
Will nobody save me closes the chapter's circle of petition. Monkey has asked Wudang, Xuyi and finally a Buddha for exactly this, at length and in verse. The fiend asks it of nobody in particular, in seven characters, and is answered at once.
