行李在何處 Where Is The Luggage

Only then did Pilgrim set to work: he loosed his master first, then let Eight Rules and Sha Monk go.

才 — only then — puts the untying after the promise rather than before it. And the order tells its own story: his master first, then his two brothers, then everybody else. It is the order of the whole chapter.

又yòu將jiāng二èr十shí八bā宿xiù、五wǔ方fāng揭jiē諦dì，個gè個gè解jiě了le。又yòu将jiāng二èr十shí八bā宿xiù、五wǔ方fāng揭jiē谛dì，个gè个gè解jiě了le。

Then he loosed the twenty-eight mansions and the Guardians of the Five Quarters, every one of them.

個個 counts thirty-three officers of Heaven in two graphs. They arrived to rescue him at the second watch and are released by him at midnight the following night, which is as close as this chapter comes to a joke about who works for whom.

Then he brought the horse over and told them to get out quickly and ahead of him.

The horse was tied up round the back by the demons and nobody has touched it since. 教 is jiào, the causative — he is giving the orders now, which is the arrangement the elder agreed to three segments ago.

方fāng出chū門mén，卻què不bù知zhī行xíng李lǐ在zài何hé處chù，又yòu來lái找zhǎo尋xún。方fāng出chū门mén，却què不bù知zhī行xíng李lǐ在zài何hé处chù，又yòu来lái找zhǎo寻xún。

They had just got out of the door when it turned out nobody knew where the luggage was, so back he came to look for it.

行 is xíng in 行李, as it is at all six occurrences of the compound in this chapter. 處 is chù here, the place — the third reading the graph has taken in nine segments.

總評 Commentary

Four sentences of housekeeping undo the entire work of the demons. The ropes, the thirty-three prisoners, the horse — all of it back in order before anybody has raised a weapon.

And then the luggage. The second half of this chapter has been one thing after another that cannot be got open by force, and the escape from all of them is undone by a bundle nobody can find. It sends Pilgrim back inside, which is what the next passage argues about.
