The demon saw that it was late, gave a whistle, told his host to look sharp and brought out his treasure.

The whistle is the same signal that brought four or five thousand demons onto the slope. 寶貝 is the chapter's second use of the word, and the first was a Guardian of the Five Quarters admitting he could not put a name to the cymbals.

Sun the Pilgrim saw it clearly: the monster loosed the bag from his waist and took it in his hand.

He is the only one who sees it coming, and what he does about that is the whole passage. is de in 看得, linking the looking to how well it was done.

Pilgrim called out, "This is bad — run!"

Nine graphs, carrying their own attribution and closing their own quotation. It is a warning — and the next sentence makes plain that he does not wait to find out whether anybody has taken it.

Then, unable to trouble himself about Eight Rules, Sha Monk or the host of devas, he went up in a somersault straight into the ninth heaven.

顧不得 is the potential negative, could not attend to, so the linking de stands between the verb and its negation. 觔斗 is the somersault, its first graph a variant way of writing sinew.

The gods, Eight Rules and Sha Monk did not take his meaning; the thing was thrown up over them and they were all packed inside again — only Pilgrim got away.

不解其意 — they did not take his meaning — is the entire difference between the ones who are caught and the one who is not. makes it the second time, and this time they had been warned.

總評 Commentary

The same trick works twice, and the second time somebody sees it coming. Pilgrim watches the bag come off the demon's waist, shouts a warning of five graphs, and is in the ninth heaven before the sentence has finished.

不解其意 does the work. They did not take his meaning — not that they were slow or unlucky, but that a shout of 不好了,走啊 was never going to move thirty-odd people who had not seen what he had seen.

And the chapter is careful about what it says of him. 顧不得, he could not attend to them, is the phrase that would excuse him; 只是行者走了, only Pilgrim got away, is the one that does not. Both are in the same passage, forty-two graphs apart.
