逐句解 Line by line
One came and reported, "The Tang Monk has gone."
Nine graphs carrying their own attribution and closing their own quotation, so the unit stands alone however short. The report itself is five graphs, and it is the first the demons know of any of it.
Another came and reported, "Pilgrim and the rest have all gone."
行 is xíng, and this is the third place in the chapter where the automatic reading offers something else for the first graph of 行者 — a name it gets right at forty of its forty-two occurrences and wrong at two.
The old demon hurriedly gave the word: "Watch every gate."
The same order he gave when the cymbals were smashed — shut the gates, let nobody out — and it fails the same way, since the party went over a wall on a gust of wind some hours ago.
Pilgrim heard it, and fearing he would be caught in the net again he gave up carrying the bundle on a pole, turned a somersault, and was out of the tower window and away.
挑 is tiāo, to carry on a shoulder-pole, and 挑不成 means the load cannot be managed that way rather than that he throws it away. 觔 is the variant of 筋 and 斗 is dǒu: this is the somersault, not a fight.
Two reports come in, in the right order, and both are already useless. The Tang Monk has gone; Pilgrim and the rest have gone; the demon orders the gates watched. Everything the establishment does here is correct and several hours too late.
Pilgrim's exit is the chapter's shortest escape and its most expensive. He got into the tower, found the bundle and had it on his shoulder — and leaves without it. The whole night's work has bought nothing at all, and the rescript, the cassock and the bowl are still in the building.
