Neck Metal Dragon, Base Earth Bat, Room Sun Hare, Heart Moon Fox, Tail Fire Tiger, Winnower Water Leopard, Dipper Wood Xiè, Ox Metal Ox, Woman Earth Raccoon-dog, Void Sun Rat, Rooftop Moon Swallow, House Fire Pig, Wall Water Yǔ, Straddler Wood Wolf, Bond Metal Dog, Stomach Earth Boar, Mane Sun Cock, Net Moon Crow, Turtlebeak Fire Monkey, Triaster Water Ape, Well Wood Àn, Ghost Metal Ram, Willow Earth Muntjac, Star Sun Horse, Net Moon Deer, Wing Fire Snake, Chariot Water Earthworm — leading the Gold-headed Guardian, the Silver-headed Guardian, the Six Jia and Six Ding and the rest, and the protectors of the faith, together with Eight Rules and Sha Monk (they did not bring the Tang Monk, and they had left the white dragon horse behind), each with his weapon in hand, all rushed forward together.
Three readings in the roll call go against the automatic one and all three are mansion names. 斗 is dǒu, the Dipper; 貉 is hé, the animal rather than the colloquial name for its pelt; and 參 is shēn, the mansion, against the cān the very same graph took at 同參禮 earlier in this chapter. 㺄 is yǔ: the Kāngxī dictionary makes it a variant of 貐, and that graph is spelled 以主切, with 庾 given as its sound.
The demon king saw them, laughed a cold ha-ha, gave one whistle, and four or five thousand demons great and small, every one of them formidable and strong, joined in a general battle on the western slope.
哨子 is a whistle, the object, not the whistling — the signal that brings the numbers up. Four or five thousand against thirty-odd is the chapter saying plainly that this fight is not going to be won by counting.
總評 Commentary
The full roll of the twenty-eight lunar mansions, named to a formula. It is the longest single sentence in the chapter by a wide margin and it is pure inventory — a hundred and twenty-four graphs during which nothing whatever happens.
The formula never varies: mansion, element, creature, three graphs each, twenty-eight times without a stumble. The creatures are the only unpredictable part of it, and three of them — the xiè, the yǔ and the àn — are beasts that scarcely exist outside this list and the glosses written on it.
And then the parenthesis, the only aside of its kind in the chapter: (不領唐三藏,丟了白龍馬). They did not bring the master, and they left the horse. The narrator puts both failures in brackets and moves straight on to the weapons.
