Line by line
The demon grew twice as fierce and led his host forward to fall on them.
Thirteen characters, and they close the block. 掩殺 is to attack under cover of something — here the general confusion the poem has just spent ten couplets describing.
Just at the point when there was no telling who had the better of it, they heard Pilgrim's shout: "Old Sun has come!"
He arrives with five characters of announcement and no bundle, and the next exchange is entirely about the second half of that. 得 is dé in 聞得, heading a claim of its own.
Eight Rules met him with, "What about the luggage?"
The first thing Eight Rules asks about is the luggage, which is the exact charge the Metal Dragon laid against Pilgrim on the hillside, now pointing the other way. 行 is xíng — the fourth of the chapter's five places where the automatic reading offers something else for the character, and the second of them inside 行李.
Pilgrim said, "Old Sun barely got out with his life, and you talk to me about luggage!"
難 is nán here, the adverb, hard to escape — against the nàn of a calamity that the same character takes three times before the chapter is out. 甚 is shén, the interrogative.
Sha Monk, gripping his precious staff, said, "Never mind the talk — get on and fight the demons."
He settles this argument the way he settled the one at the gate, by pointing at what has to be done next. It is the third and last time in the chapter that Sha Monk ends a dispute in a single sentence, and he has spoken only three times in all.
Pilgrim comes back empty-handed, and the first thing Eight Rules asks about is the luggage. It is the exact question the Metal Dragon put to Pilgrim on the hillside — 你好重物輕人 — turned round and aimed the other way.
The answer is a flat rebuke, and it is fair: he was in the tower, he had the bundle on his shoulder, and he left it because a rope slipped and woke the house. Neither of them mentions that going back for it was his own idea.
