Sealed Under A Lid
Line by line
The demon king called in his troops and went back to the monastery, had the ropes fetched out again, and had them bound as before.
照舊 — as before — is the key word of the passage. Everything in it has happened once already, and the text simply says so rather than describing it a second time.
The Tang Monk, Eight Rules and Sha Monk were strung up high from the beams, the white horse was tethered behind, and the gods were all bound and carried into a cellar, and the lid locked down over them.
The pilgrims get the beams and the celestial establishment gets a hole in the ground with a lid on it. The horse is tied up behind for the second time, in almost the same words — 把馬拴在後邊 then, 白馬拴在後邊 now.
The demons did as they were told, stowed them one by one, and no more of that.
一一 is the distributive, one by one, and both graphs keep yī — a fixed reading that the ordinary tone-shifting would spoil. 不題 closes the demons' thread for the third time in the chapter.
The chapter has now performed this sequence three times: taken, bound, stowed at the back, and 不題. The third time it takes sixty-one graphs and half of those are the disposal.
The arrangements have grown more elaborate, though. The first time they were simply thrown down anyhow; now the pilgrims hang from the beams and the gods are sealed in a cellar under a locked lid. The demon has learned something from being robbed twice in one night.
