The old demon king started up in a fright out of his sleep, threw on his clothes, beat the drum, mustered the demons and had them take their weapons.

Six predicates in twenty-two graphs with not a connective between them, which is the prose running at the speed of the emergency. 睡裡 puts the fright inside the sleep: he is alarmed before he is properly awake.

By now it was near daybreak.

Six graphs of clock. The star lords came down at the second watch and the assault ran to the third; this closes the night that has held the entire middle of the chapter.

They came crowding down to the jewelled terrace, and there was Sun the Pilgrim with the ranked mansions standing round the smashed cymbals. The colour went out of their faces.

大驚失色 — great alarm, colour lost — occurs once in the chapter, and it is the demons who get it. The pilgrims, who had far more cause, got only 慌得. 宿 is xiù in 列宿, the ranked lunar mansions, not the of lodging for the night.

He gave the order at once: "You there, my lads! Shut the front gate tight and let nobody out."

It is the wrong order, and the wrongness is the joke: the one person he needs to keep in is already able to leave by air. The vocative and its exclamation are cut off from the order in the source, though they belong to it — two graphs of attribution and a three-graph call say nothing on their own.

總評 Commentary

The demon king's response is fast, competent and beside the point. He is awake, armed and at the terrace inside twenty-two graphs, he reads the situation correctly, and his instruction is to lock the front door.

That instruction is answered in the very next sentence of the chapter. It is the second time in eight hundred graphs that somebody has done exactly the right thing about the wrong problem: the star lords guarded a set of cymbals that could not be opened, and the demons now seal a gate against an opponent who leaves upward.
