逐句解 Line by line
The demon hunted front and back and could not find the Tang Monk or the rest; and seeing that the sky was getting light he took up his cudgel, led his host out in pursuit, and saw the twenty-eight mansions and the Guardians of the Five Quarters with cloud and mist boiling about them, camped below the mountain slope.
著 is zháo in 尋不著, the potential negative — hunted and did not make contact. That forces 不 to bù rather than the bú the automatic reading gives, because the character after it now falls in the second tone instead of the fourth.
The demon king gave a shout: "Where do you think you are going? Here I am!"
那 reads nǎ, the interrogative standing in for 哪 — a direct question, which is one of the three grounds this project recognises for that reading. 喝 is hè, a shout.
Horn Wood Dragon called out urgently, "Brothers! The monster is coming."
The names of the twenty-eight run to a fixed formula — the lunar mansion, its element, its creature — so this one is Horn, wood, dragon. His is the only line spoken in the whole roll call, though the Metal Dragon of Kang speaks twice earlier in the chapter. 角 is jiǎo, first of the twenty-eight.
Daybreak, and the demon comes out to find the host of Heaven camped on the mountain slope. He has spent the night searching an empty building; the party he is hunting got over the wall hours ago and has been sitting in the open ever since.
The two shouts that follow are matched, and neither is really a challenge. The demon asks where they think they are going and announces himself; a star lord tells his brothers the monster is coming. Both sides have known where the other was since first light.
