沙僧道：「哥啊，你生為師父，死也還在口裡。且甦醒，我們在這裡哩。」行者睜開眼道：「兄弟們在這裡？老孫吃了虧也。」八戒笑道：「你才子發昏的，若不是老豬救你啊，已此了帳了，還不謝我哩。」沙僧道：「哥啊，你生为师父，死也还在口里。且苏醒，我们在这里哩。」行者睁开眼道：「兄弟们在这里？老孙吃了亏也。」八戒笑道：「你才子发昏的，若不是老猪救你啊，已此了帐了，还不谢我哩。」
逐句解 Line by line
Sha the Monk said: ‘Brother — in life you were all for the master, and even in death he is still on your lips.
Sha Monk says the thing the scene has earned: in life you were all for the master, and even in death he was on your lips. 為 is wèi, for the sake of. It is the plainest expression of affection in the chapter and it comes from the disciple who says least.
Come to yourself now; we are here.’
And then simply: come round, we are here. Four words of reassurance to someone who has been dead for a page.
The Pilgrim opened his eyes and said: ‘Are you brothers here?
His eyes open. The question he asks is about them, not himself.
Old Sun has come off badly.’
吃虧 means to come off badly, to take a loss -- an everyday phrase, still in constant use. It is a remarkably measured thing to say about having been burned, smoked, drowned and resuscitated. Wukong is not a self-pitying character, whatever else he is.
Eight Rules laughed: ‘You were in a dead faint just now; if old Pig hadn't saved you, you'd already have been done for — and still you won't thank me!’
Bajie's bedside manner, and it is entirely in character: no sympathy, an immediate claim on the credit, and a complaint about not being thanked yet. 才子 is a colloquial "just now." 了帳 is to settle accounts, so being done for. The first of the two characters at the end is read liǎo, finishing, and the second is the light one that just marks a change of state.
The near-tragedy is over and the novel gets back to its ordinary key as fast as it can. Wukong wakes, asks after his brothers, and admits defeat in two words. Bajie immediately demands to be thanked.
It is worth registering how much the Great Sage has lost in this chapter. Beaten by the fire, driven off by the smoke, nearly killed by the water he himself went to fetch an ocean of, and brought back only by a massage from the brother who abandoned him. His response is to say that old Sun has come off badly and get up.
