夫死子絕 Husband Dead And Sons Gone
Line by line
He asked again, "And the magic fungus — how was that stolen?"
的 holds de by the invariant ruling. The unit carries its own attribution — a bare 又問, without a named speaker — and closes its own quotation, so it stands alone however short.
The dragon dame said, "That was my young daughter, the Myriad Sage princess, who went in secret up before the Hall of Divine Mists in the Great Canopy Heaven and stole the Queen Mother's nine-leaved magic fungus.
娘娘 is set by the registered kinship reading, with a neutral second syllable — the third such pair in the chapter after 爺爺 and 哥哥. 大羅天 and 靈霄殿 are the highest heaven of the Daoist scheme and the Jade Emperor's own hall, so the theft was committed at the top of the world.
The śarīra, getting the immortal breath of this plant to keep it warm, would not decay in a thousand years and would give off light for ten thousand.
載 is zǎi, a year, where pypinyin gives the zài of carrying. 溫養著 takes the durative 著 zhe, and 得 is dé, the full verb — the relic obtains the plant's breath. 不 takes bú before the falling 壞 huài.
Sweep it over the ground or over a field, and at once there are ten thousand shafts of rosy light and a thousand strands of auspicious vapour.
中 at 田中 is zhōng. 掃一掃 is the reduplicated V一V pattern that gives an action a light, brief quality, and its 一 takes yì before the dipping 掃 sǎo — the same shape as 按一按 and 理一理 early in the chapter.
Now you have taken it away, and brought it about that my husband is dead and my sons cut off, my son-in-law lost and my daughter gone. A thousand times I beg you, spare my life."
弄得 takes 得 at de, the linking reading. 子 at 子絕 is zǐ, a standalone noun inside a four-graph figure and not a suffix. 喪 is sàng here, to be lost — and the chapter's other 喪, at 停喪掛孝, is the funeral sāng; neither is guarded. 罷 is the particle ba, not the verb.
The second half of the deposition explains the fungus, and it is the only part of the whole affair that has never been accounted for. The princess went up to the Jade Emperor's own hall and stole from the Queen Mother's garden; the plant was for keeping the relic warm; the light everyone in two chapters has been fighting over was the two things working together.
The dragon dame then names her losses in eight graphs — 夫死子絕,婿喪女亡 — husband dead, sons cut off, son-in-law lost, daughter gone. Four members, four dead or fled, and every one of them killed or driven off in the last twenty passages by the two people standing in front of her.
She is not making an argument out of it. The clause that follows is a plea for her own life and nothing else. The novel gives the destruction of a household its most compressed possible statement and then moves straight on to the question of what to do with the survivor.
