The Myriad Sage Dragon King was just then drinking with his nine-headed son-in-law when he saw the two of them come in; he set down his cup at once and asked what disaster this was.

駙馬 is the title of a ruler's son-in-law, and the chapter uses it twenty-one times. 九頭 identifies him as the Nine-Headed Worm named in the deposition taken in the chapter before this one, where he was described but never seen. 正…忽 sets an action in progress against the thing that interrupts it. is deictic, .

The two made their report at once: "Last night, on our round of inspection, we were taken by the Tang Monk and Sun the Pilgrim as they swept the pagoda, and bound fast with iron chains.

This morning we were brought before the king, and then that Pilgrim and Zhu Eight Rules seized the pair of us — the ears cut from one and the lip from the other — and threw us into the water, sending us to report that they demand the treasure from the pagoda's crown."

The two in this segment take different readings and both are supplied by position. 抓著 is zháo, the achieved contact of a grip that closes on its object; 著我來報 is zhuó, the causative that dispatches another to act — the same reading it took in Pilgrim's own order at 著他即送. at 水中 is zhōng, and both are the deictic .

And so they told the whole affair, first and last, over in detail.

is the disposal marker jiāng, taking the affair as the object of the telling. 一遍 takes at before the falling biàn. A short narrator's clause of this kind is not a quotation-closing tail, so it stands as a segment of its own rather than folding back into the speech before it.

總評 Commentary

The Dragon King is drinking with his son-in-law when the news arrives, which is very nearly where the deposition in the chapter before this one left him — a household at its ease on stolen goods. He sets the cup down. It is a small gesture and the text gives it its own verb rather than passing over it.

The report is delivered twice: once in direct speech, and then again in the narrator's compression — 遂將前後事細說了一遍, they told the whole affair, first and last, over in detail. The text lets a character give the short version aloud and then notes that the long version was also given, so that nothing is owed to the reader and nothing has to be repeated.

What the two fiends say is accurate, which is worth noticing, since they have every reason to soften it and do not. They name their captors, the method, the mutilation and the demand, in that order. Their whole usefulness to Pilgrim was that they would carry the message straight, and they do.
